1st Thirsk Beaver Scouts Visit the Blue Cross Animal Centre

As part of the Sammy the Spider Challenges to celebrate the 18th anniversary of Beavers, we organised a visit to the Blue Cross Animal Centre at Topcliffe.

The centre manager was contacted to forewarn her of our intended visit and to request a tour. The Northern Echo newspaper was also made aware of the visit and would come along to both take photographs of the beavers and to advertise our colony. We asked all beavers to bring an item of pet food that we could make into a hamper to present to the Blue Cross, we had a fantastic response to this.

So, on Saturday 15 May 2004, about 14 beavers (and several helpers) turned up. The boys were split into 2 groups, with one half visiting the cats and the other half visiting the dogs, then changing over. Each group was given a guided tour by a staff member at the centre. The Northern Echo photographer showed up and took a fantastic photo of about 6 of the boys holding some kittens, and the story was run on Page 6 of the newspaper on Monday 17 May.

The visit was a huge success both for the beavers and the Blue Cross as most parents were cajoled into adopting a pet or buying a toy for pets at home. As well as adding another leg to Sammy, some of the boys also gained points for their animal care badges.
